Mr. Dunderbak's Has Been Serving Tampa Bay Excellent German Food and Drink for More Than Forty Years!Who wants to eat? It may be almost 11pm here in Tampa but just looking at this picture makes us want to go grab a pint of Mr. Dunderbak's best Hefeweizen and a hot pretzel with mustard. Good eats at a Tampa landmark. More than four decades has now passed since Mr. Dunderbak's first opened their doors in the (then new) University Mall adjacent to the University of South Florida in Tampa. Over the proceeding decades the location may have changed (for the better) but the quality has remained exceptionally high.
Other German restaurants have come and gone but Mr. Dunderbak’s continues to please locals and tourists alike. Having grown up in Tampa, a trip to Mr. Dunderbak’s was always the highlight of any time spent at University Mall. Forget the food-court the old location there in the mall, was dark, woodsy and carried an aura about that to my young mind must have been indicative of the sights, sounds and smells of a European eatery. The place offered escapism, a restaurant completely divergent from any other in the area and on top of that it offered amazing and authentic food at reasonable prices. Even in my college years I would often slip away from campus at the University of South Florida and enjoy a sandwich or bier in between classes. The place was good and better than just good it was consistent. I my nearly thirty years of eating there I’ve not once walked away hungry, unhappy or unfulfilled.
In it’s new location in New Tampa now for several years, none of the awesome ambiance was lost in the eatery’s transition from it’s University Mall location. Instead, the new location offers more room and multiple rooms or lounges that accomodate all patrons. Family friendly and fun, Mr. Dunderbak’s manages to embody that European notion of the pub, offering good food and drink to it’s patrons in an environment that is equally comfortable for college students, thirty-somethings and senior citizens alike. Comradery, good eats and good drink define the ambiance and accouterments of this unique New Tampa eatery and biergarten.
A fine drinking establishment, Dunderbak’s takes it’s biers seriously… Offering 55 draft beers, 400 bottles and even it’s own home brew club there really is something here for every beer drinker. With a beer menu that changes seasonally and strives to offer all sorts of European and American beers it’s always fun to see what new is on tap or in house.
Offering a menu that’s nothing short of massive, Mr. Dunderbak’s serves up authentic german fare that encompasses everything from simple sandwiches to Jagerschnitzel and home made Spätzle. Quite simple everything here is good but of particular favorite for this Tampa native is the legendary Der Schwarz-Russe or the Black Russian. A triple-decker sandwich of gargantuan proportion that piles ham, turkey, imported swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato and Thousand Island dressing atop fresh Pumpernickel bread. Fans of Corn-Beef will also love, Der Blue Max which has been a triple-decker house favorite for more than four decades that piles high the fresh corned beef, double-smoked pastrami, imported Swiss cheese and chunky blue cheese dressing atop three thick slices of fresh rye bread. Offering a wide assortment of meals, Mr. Dunderbak’s also serves some of the best schnitzel in town which is of course perfectly complimented by a hot and fresh pretzel with mustard or house made Spätzle.
Remember though to save room as Mr. Dunderbak’s also features and excellent dessert menu that offers sugary delicacies such as layer cakes, home made apple strudel and oddly baklava (by way of nearby Tarpon Springs).
