Great Food and Hospitality at Joe’s BBQ (Northern, GA)

BBQ Is A Great Southern Tradition and Craft To Be Expertly Honed and Handed Down from One Generation to the Next

On a recent business trip to Atlanta we set aside some time for a day-trip up into the mountains of Northern Georgia, a driving sojourn which would ultimately lead us not only to the town of Blue Ridge, GA but also the most hospitable dinner table at Joe's BBQ.

A quaint town nestled in northern Georgia’s scenic mountains, Blue Ridge, GA boasts a population of little more than 1,200 people in a town barely more than 2 square miles in size. This is the epitome of relaxed southern-mountain living, the sort of town that makes the most of what it’s got and in doing so has created a community and culture that accommodates both locals and tourists alike. Want to go shopping? They’ve got that covered. Looking for high-end dining? You’ve got several choices. Want to eat at a Cupcake Wars winning cupcakery? They’ve got that covered too! But perhaps most importantly, un-ostentatiously situated atop the hill that overlooks the historic downtown resides smoky culinary mecca that is Joe’s BBQ.

Having wandered up the hill in search of BBQ we discovered that the hour was getting late and Joe’s would soon be closing, bummer because we had heard such good things about this tiny eatery. As my wife made her way back to the car having just looked at the hours out pops an older gentleman with gray hair beckoning us to come on in and they would take care of us… Clearly not the sort of hospitality we routinely know back in Florida we were both immediately taken by the kind gesture and followed who we would soon learn was Joe back inside to a warm, friendly, clean and comfortable dining room that resembled the sort of log-cabin you always picture when thinking of mountain get-aways.

Joe was quick to tell us that they didn’t have much food left as they had been cleaned out by a large party and take-out orders but they would be happy to see what they had left and make sure we “got fed.” A quick run-down of the food still available revealed some chopped pork, bbq chicken and ribs. My wife and I made sure to ask that we were not putting either Joe or his staff out with eating so close to closing or making them scramble to come up with food? The response was overwhelming from both Joe and the entire staff that they were happy to have us.

Sold on the notion we were not an inconvenience to this amazing little restaurant’s staff my wife and I opted for the BBQ chicken and chopped pork respectively. Our sides consisted of potato salad and cole slaw for myself and a double order or potato salad for my wife. Immediately the ladies in the restaurant scurried about while Joe talked to us a bit and asked us where we from and how we had enjoyed our time in the town, etc… Never one did we let on that we owned a magazine or did food reviews and all the while Joe made us feel welcome as he shared information about the town and some of the other restaurants and eateries.

Then in short order our food appeared at the table… We were now nearly the only diners in the restaurant as those people who were there when we arrived had begun to trickle out, wishing the staff and Joe a good evening as they left. The food looked amazing, BBQ as simply elegant and smoke ringed as it should always be. No flash, no embellishment just the requisite simple presentation that all good purveyors of BBQ readily master. The pork was moist, tender and smoky even without the sauce. The chicken fell off the bone it was so tender and moist. Then there was the sauce, savory and spicy with just the right amount of vinegar and sweetness to perfectly compliment the smoky flavored meats. Certainly nothing store-bought or doctored here, this was exactly the type of one-off sauced you expect from any great pit-master. The sides were fresh and excellent as well, and while the coleslaw was excellent it paled in comparison to the creamy savory potato salad…a potato salad that both my wife and I immediately agreed upon as the best we had ever had out…anywhere. Then Joe popped into the back for a moment and reappeared holding a different bottle of sauce…Alabama white sauce. A bit skeptical at first my quizzed Joe about it and we learned it is a sauce popular on chicken that you find in Alabama and some of the more western southern states. A sort of creamy, vinegary horseradish laden concoction that while sounding a bit peculiar to describe really was quite excellent and serves to bring out the smoky goodness of BBQ chicken.

Not wanting to loiter or keep these kind people any later than we had to, we quickly ate our dinner and took about half to go. The prices were reasonable, in fact the prices were by Florida or Atlanta standards quite affordable. We said our thanks and good-byes to both Joe and his kindly staff and wished them well on their weekend. Joe walked us out and as we were saying our good-byes my wife made mention that she professionally baked cupcakes and happened to have a massive cooler of them in the BMW, headed for the 8th annual Z Nationals in Atlanta the following day…and would Joe and his staff like some? Taken back and appreciative, my wife put a sampler pack together for Joe and his staff to enjoy…we then shook hands and parted ways. Our sincerest hope, being that Joe and the entire crew at Joe’s BBQ enjoyed those cupcakes if only a tenth as much as we had our enjoyed our most hospitable dinner with them. Thanks Joe!
