Porsche just announced plans to develop a third generation version of its hot flywheel-propelled Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid.
The company says that the third generation of the über fast auto will further refine its hybrid drivetrain, with the eventual goal of integrating the new-found technology into Porsche’s commercial vehicles. Although the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid 2.0 was pretty impressive, it is expected that the Porsche team will attempt to lower the weight of the car and tweak the flywheel technology to try to get even more power out of the hybrid system.
The new Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid will be developed and hopefully released sometime in 2012 and like its predecessors is sure to hit the
track soon after for lots of hands on testing by the Porsche team. Version 2.0 packed a mean punch on the track as it was carted around the world for extensive on the asphalt testing. Porsche’s 911 GT3 R Hybrid 2.0 was capable of going from 0 to 60 in just 2.5 seconds. The vehicle was propelled by its 470 horsepower 4.0-liter engine in the rear and the 36,000 rpm flywheel in the front packing a total system capacity of 672 horsepower.
The 470 horsepower engine was assisted by the flywheel system placed near the front axle that stored kinetic energy from braking, and it was
capable of giving a 200 horsepower rush of speed. In their work on improving the first version of the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid the Porsche team decreased the weight of the vehicle by 20% by reworking the high components of the vehicle, removed huge air intakes on the vehicle and reconfigured the skin to make it more aerodynamic. We were impressed with version 2.0 and can’t wait to see what innovative improvements Porsche unveils in the 2012 iteration of this hybrid speed machine.T
