Described by Rolling Stone Magazine as “Big, dreamy pop from SoCal guitar romantics,” The Steelwells are indeed something of an anomalous band; a cross between more traditional “indie” artists and louder more mainstream alternative acts. The result is quite simply unique, a band that couples harmonies with soaring vocals and upbeat echoing guitar riffs with just the right mix of bass and drums to keep you unconsciously tapping your toe along to the beat.
Often compared to fellow indie rocker favorites, The Shins; The Steelwells front man Joey Winter has been quoted as saying that classic song writers such as Jeff Buckley and Elvis Costello are actually more influential for the band, being credited as the driving influences in teaching a young Winter how to write and sing.
Local favorites in Southern California, The Steelwells have garnered quite a reputation and following for their live performances; to which they have received overwhelmingly positive reviews by both and critics and fans alike. Success hasn’t come quickly for the band but through perseverance and hard work they have managed to establish themselves in the Los Angeles musical community and beyond. Recently their music has been featured in several mainstream television shows such as NBC’s “CHUCK”, placement which has resulted in a broader range of exposure for the band helping to position them as an up-and-coming band to keep an eye on and an ear open for.
